Nothing But You is a unique San Francisco bay area artistic endeavor blending ambient coloring with a loungy flavor. This creates the perfect setting for Nicky’s sensual and soulful voice. Along with Phill the duo creates a beautiful sound collage of Rock, Soul and Jazz.
An album has 12 smooth and jazzy cover tracks. These soft jazz remakes are nice to listen to when all you want to do is relax.
Nicky’s voice is one of elegant restraint and sensuousness. Hers is not an overpowering vocal presence, but rather, a very inviting one. She seduces deliciously with gentleness and whisper-to-the mic sultriness. Her diction, phrasing, dynamic nuance and intonation are exceptional.
The master musician Phill serves as producer; he meets Nicky in 2016 (again), both bridging their instincts between classic instrumentation and jazz. The arrangements are voluminous, loose and tight at once, but Nicky’s voice is always at the front of this proscenium; each shows restraint as they lean into her collective vision. The sound they conjure is chill-inducing, an easy sound for subject matter that’s as real and beautiful as it gets.
The instrumental sections during the tracks allow the listener to lose themselves in Nothing But You’s magical musical world. Just when you think the album is coming to an end, the track kicks in once again.
“All By Myself” is the perfect track to eradicate those January blues. Press play, and get ready to let loose.
The CD certainly flows smoothly from one track to another, making it real easy listening material.
It’s hard to pick a favourite cover, as each has its place in the story told and they all show a slightly different side to their music. However, we do have a soft spot for “A song for you”.
About “Nothing But You”:
In 1964, Nicky at the age of 3 met Phill. They were in the same kindergarten and elementary school, growing up in the same neighborhood of Marumori, a small town in Japan surrounded by beautiful nature. Nicky was a very popular girl with a cute smile and lively personality. Phill was attracted to Nicky secretly.
Nicky was the student council president during her elementary school days. Also very sports minded with a bubbly personality, Nicky loved public attention. A very shy boy, Phill loves to paint and had the talent for it getting rave reviews from his teachers and classmates.
Attending also the same junior high school, Nicky (now at age 13) confessed her love to Phill, giving him chocolates for Valentine! When Phill had to transfer school because of his father’s new business place, the teacher asked the class to say their words of farewell to Phill. Nicky Promptly, Nicky raised her hands and said to Phill, “may I be your bride when we grow up?” Phill was shocked and got embarrassed. His shyness overcame him, felt dizzy, as if he was hit in the head with a hammer! Phill could not even look at Nicky in her eyes. Thereafter, Phill avoided Nicky. The two separated ways without talking after that episode, even though they were attracted to each other.
On February 9, 2016, during Nicky’s audition with “The Voice” in Chicago to become a Diva, she received an email from her junior high school friend in Japan about their upcoming reunion. And just by chance, her friend mentioned Phill. Pill had become a genius artist with great sense of music, art, hair & make up and fashion who would be able to make Nicky world famous Diva as her producer. Soon thereafter through social media networking, Nicky and Phill got reconnected again after 40 years! After exchanging over 20,000 SNS messages with Phill, Nicky was on the Plane from her home, San Francisco to Japan to meet him. From that day of the reunion with Phill (in April 2016) the two became one as a phoenix and began to fly and soar over the music world as a messenger of the legend of eternal love … and that was how their collaboration started forming the music unit “Nothing But You” in order to convey the legend of love …
Even with such an impressive resume, though, Nothing But You is on a different plane.
So, what would we rate this album? We give it a solid 10/10.
2017 looks set to be a great year for PHILL & NICKY. Delivering music through their own label, Phoenix Records, allows them to look after every aspect of their career, including putting on live visual spectacles.
